This labor day weekend, across the nation, DUI police officers will be at drunk driving checkpoints. Their goal, to get as many drunk drivers as possible off the highways, and reduce the injuries and deaths caused by impaired drivers. Sobriety checkpoints are not legal in all states. Where they are legal, they are employed with differing degrees of effectiveness. In Scottsdale, Arizona, the police department has announced the date, time and location of their planned checkpoint. Perhaps their reasoning is that anybody who drives into it with alcohol in their system must be drunk. I have written elsewhere about

Russia is Selling Hezbollah surface-to-air and anti-tank missiles
Hezbollah's Leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah warned that his terrorist armed militia is now much, much, stronger than before the devastating war that took place in.2006 between his militia and Israel. He rhetorically and pompously alleged that his militia would destroy Israel if its army wages any attacks against Lebanon.
.
Nasrallah issued this threat last Saturday at a Boy Scout ceremony in Beirut, as a response to Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's remark last week that "if Lebanon becomes a Hezbollah state, then we won't have any restrictions" in striking the country. Olmert claimed that during the last war, Israel did not use all of its firepower because the enemy was Hezbollah and not its host country Lebanon.
.
Nasrallah would n...

First Christmas by Alastair Macdonald ... A Classic is Born
A book review generally consists of a perusal of the writer's style, the story line and the flow and the viability of the subject matter. That would be nearly impossible with Alastair Macdonald's "First Christmas." Both the birth of Christ and the birth of Macdonald's book hold far too much for one brief review. Here is part one of two or perhaps three.
For Alastair Macdonald there would be no burning bush like the one Moses saw and there would be no blinding light such as the Apostle Paul experienced on the road to Damascus. All there would be is a "gentle nudge" between times and the knowledge that each barely perceptible nudge would lead him on a twenty five year course to write a single book that although very small would fill a huge...

Yahoo Chat: Show Mercy and Die Already
Apparently my old article "The Death of Yahoo Chat", which discussed changes being implemented by Yahoo Corporation in 2005 that were designed to protect children from predators, still circulates in some corners of cyber space. Three or four months ago I received an email through my still active yahoo account inviting me to try a website that was attempting to recapture some of the finer aspects of yahoo chat. Having nearly abandoned yahoo chat shortly after the powers that be added a redundant login policy and eliminated end user ability to create private rooms; the invitation to join a discussion community caught my attention.
Over the years I've repeatedly tried real-time chat software solutions for my personal discussion site

Bangladesh's new game plan
Bangladeshi government, which has heavy Islamist influence as well anti West and anti Semitic notion for years has silently changed strategy in handling the case of courageous Muslim journalist Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury.
Before I go into detail on this topic, let me first give a brief description of how best I know Bangladesh. I know this since much before it was born in 1971. I know the people and of course, know something that many of the Western pundits or analysts will take time to realize.
The former government having heavy ties with Islamists brought sedition, treason and blasphemy charges against Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury for promoting inter faith understanding, confronting culture of religious hatred and for demanding re...

Choose The Right Song To Sing For Karaoke - The Big Night Performance
The biggest decision that anyone has to make for karaoke is what song they should attempt on stage. There are literally thousands of tracks available with most karaoke sets, so it can be daunting looking through the big book of songs, but if you keep in mind a few select tips it will make your night easier, and provide as much enjoyment as possible.
First, make sure that you pick a karaoke track that suits your voice. Whether it is your first time or 101st time, you have to make sure that you can reach at least majority of the notes you need. If you have a deep voice, there is no point of choosing artists like Celine Dion or Whitney Houston, and the same goes for high-pitch voices; Barry White should be out of the question. Instead choo...

How To Have A Great Family Party With Karaoke

Karaoke is perfect because there is definitely no age limit in who can perform, everyone can find something that they will enjoy singing, and performing in front of family is a great way to simply sit back and have a good night. But of course you cannot take the children to a karaoke bar to have a good time, so why don...

Before the dust settles on the Bernie Mac tragedy it is important for everyone to understand two things:
1) It is abnormal to die from pneumonia at age 50.
2) There are millions of Americans with autoimmune problems of one type or another at risk for the same fate as Bernie Mac.
Conspicuously absent from the facts surrounding Bernie's death is the lack of specific information about what actually caused his death. We are left to connect the dots based on non-specific comments made by family members that were reported in People magazine. Isn't it convenient that doctors and hospitals can hide behind medical privacy, especially when ...

Surrogacy Economics and Indian Law by Sudesh Kumar
In this day and age where capitalism rules the world, there has been much debate over the commoditization of numerous once-sacred activities such as child birth. For a fixed price tag, you can now implant your spouse's and your gametes into a third-party's womb and receive your child 9 months later. However, opponents of surrogacy view the advent of surrogacy as the beginning of a slippery slope. By allowing couples to pay for the birth of healthy babies from the womb of a surrogate, some have felt that it is similar to selling the baby in the end as money is transacted and what the couple receives is the baby. Others have argued that surrogate mothers undergo mental trauma as they are expected to give up the baby that has lived in their wo...

Save the Self-Esteem of the Beleaguered Green Bean
By The Laughing Chef
Who could blame the green bean if it were discovered to have a diminished sense of self worth?
At the heart of the problem would be an ugly bigotry against side dishes. We have seen this played out, time and time again, in restaurants across the land. You order from the menu, and the person who will later transport the food from kitchen asks ... almost as if it were an afterthought ... what side items you'd like with it. Those items are listed on a submenu to the regular menu, turning side dishes into second class citizens in the world of food.
You may shake your fist at the sky in defiance of this, a futile feel-good gesture. You may also take concrete action, to show the green bean the respect it de...

FILM REVIEW: House Bunny Does One Thing Well
By Nathaniel Shockey
The only reason I saw House Bunny was because it was the most popular movie that came out last weekend, and nothing else looked particularly good anyway. I approached it with low expectations, anticipating a cheap, trashy movie. But as is often the case, expectations surpassed reality.
The Playboy empire is probably one of the most brilliantly run businesses in history. Any business founded on selling pictures of naked women, especially naked women who are 99 percent fake, ought to be an underground one. How could it stand up for one second in the light of any society that claims an ounce of moral integrity? Evidently, there is a way.
The trick is to focus primarily on the mesmerizing glow of barely c...

This novel takes place a decade before the Internet so there is no online dating, as we know it today. Peter decided to try and find someone through personal ads. His daughter encouraged him to "go for it".
Some of the men Peter met were absolutely hilarious. There is Henry who crocheted covers for toilet paper. Peter just could not believe this creative outlet. Then there was Dr. Leo who told Peter over the phone that his vita was fifty-six pages. Peter realized later on that should have been enough to warn him right there. Next came Walter, a physician. The first thing Peter noticed about Walter is a great deal of dandruff...

Why 401(k) Retirement Plans Really Don't Work
The good news about the Internet is the information we can get our cursors on instantly; the bad news is the information we can get our heads around instantly, but without any way of gauging accuracy, relevance, or completeness. This is particularly evident in the financial-investment-retirement world, where thousands of websites tell us how to do things and why, and why things work the way they do and how. Few gurus explain why and how certain concepts and plans of action just may not work the way they are supposed to.
You don't need to read very far before the fingernail-screeching 401(k) chalkboard becomes deafening. For example, do they provide: 1) free money from employers, 2) lower taxable income, 3) retirement without any worries...
